Hi Deborah, I particularly like your lioness! Did you use just the watercolor pencils or is it also the crayons. I am looking for a way to sketch outside with a little bit of pastel feel but not the dust. These might be a way to go. Thoughts?
Actually, for this one I used #2 pencil to do a complete drawing and then added some watercolor pencil over that, wetting it lightly to make the shaded areas. I would think that watercolor pencils might please you for sketching outside, but it's the pencil beneath that gives it the look reminiscent of pastels.
I worked in pastels for 30 years. When I had to give them up I took up gouache instead. It's the one (dustless) painting medium that most resembles pastels: you can work dark to light, it has a slightly flat, dusty look when dry, and the color can be every bit as brilliant as pastels. My husband and I just took a 3.000 mile driving trip. I painted in gouache on my lap with an Altoids tin palette and waterbrush the whole way. It worked well.
